Penny's abortion took place in New Paltz

Billy Kostecki, Johnny Castle, Baby Houseman and unhappily pregnant Penny Johnson are sitting in the bunkhouse. Billy says:
One of the counselors knows a doctor, a real MD, just traveling through New Paltz one day next week. We can get an appointment but it costs $250.
According to Google Maps, the drive from Kellerman's Mountain House* to New Paltz is more than one hour.

Drive from Grossinger's (i.e. Kellerman's) to New Paltz
is more than an hour in the year 2017.

New Paltz is located along Interstate 87, which goes directly south to New York City.

They turned west at New Paltz.
In 1963, the population of New Paltz was about 6,000. New Paltz is the home of State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz.

The following four screenshots from Google Maps show the view from the old town's main intersection of Main Street and North Front Street. The town center looked similar in 1963. (Click on the images to enlarge them.)

Below is the old town's shopping center on Main Street.

You can see a slide show of the old town on that webpage.

I suppose that the counselor who informed Billy about the abortionist visiting New Paltz was a SUNY student who worked as a counselor at Kellerman's during summer vacations.

A resort "counselor" is a staff employee who manages activities for the guests' children. The adult supervisors at summer camps are called "counselors".

Speaking of summer camps, anyone who still has not watched the following video, Dirty Camping, must watch it now. The video is delightful.

If you already have watched the video, then you know you want to watch it again. Just do it!

The counselors were subordinate to Stan the Social Director.

Billy drove Penny to and from New Paltz for her abortion.

* Kellerman's is a fictional place that is based on Grossinger's Resort Hotel, which Eleanor Bergstein's family visited. Google Maps indicates that the "Grossinger's Old Hotel Historical Landmark" is about five miles from Loch Sheldrake. Penny Johnson remarked in the movie that the drive from Grossinger's to the Sheldrake was about 20 minutes. The movie shows that the dive is on an old, unpaved road, so the five-mile drive would have lasted about 20 minutes in 1963.
