Holiday Reading

I will be away on a family vacation through the Fourth of July holiday.

When I resume, I intend to finish my series of articles about Lisa Houseman's political rebellion and then to continue my review of Eleanor Bergstein's book Advancing Paul Newman. I have several ideas for new analytical essays.

In the meantime, you might find something to read or watch from the following lists.

This Blog is Too Sexual for Google

A few days ago I received this e-mail from Google.

I went to AdSense and learned that advertising on two of my webpages now will be limited because of excessive Adult: sexual content.
Ron Jeremy's Reminiscences About Borscht-Belt Resorts

How far did Baby and Johnny go sexually?
Google is not requiring me to "fix" these pages, but advertising on them will be limited.

Those two pages have received unusually large numbers of pageviews.
The article about Ron Jeremy has received 15,650 pageviews.

The article about Baby and Johnny's sexual activities has received 6,200 pageviews.
=======

In the past month, this blog has been receiving about 850 pageviews a day. I do not know how they are counted. The overwhelming majority of pageviews are about Patrick Swayze's "secret son".

For many years, I have had the impression that only about a dozen people read my blog regularly. Some people read it regularly for a while and then stop, but they are replaced by new regular readers. Thus, the number of regular readers always remains about a dozen. However, I am just speculating based on the pageviews of my ordinary posts.

I get very few comments or e-mails. I never have had any frequent commenters.

======

I earn about $11 (eleven dollars) a month from the advertising. That barely pays for the few books and DVDs that I have purchased. (My biggest expense was that my wife and I went to see the Dirty Dancing stage musical.)

The limitation of advertising on those two webpages must cost me no more than 2¢ a month.

I have been thinking that I might just get rid of the advertising, because I don't like all that clutter on my blog.

======

I put a PayPal DONATE button in my blog's upper-right corner, but I have not received any donations.

For a while, I fantasized that some rich person might patronize my blog with a big donation. So much wealth has been destroyed by the coronavirus epidemic, however, that I no longer fantasize about any such patronage.

So, my blog is essentially just a labor of love -- which I explained here.

The 1963 Movie Love With the Proper Stranger

The movie Love With the Proper Stranger was released to the movie theaters in December 1963. For sure, Baby Houseman went to watch it along with some Mount Holyoke College classmates. The movie tells the story of a young, unmarried woman who gets pregnant and decides to get an illegal abortion.

The young woman, the character Angie Rossini, is played by the actress Natalie Wood, who was nominated for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role.

The young man who made Angie pregnant, the character Rocky Papasano, is played by the actor Steve McQueen, who was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role.

The movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Story and Screenplay.

 =======

The following video clip shows the movie's first eight minutes. Rocky is a professional musician who has come into a musicians' union hiring hall to try to get hired for some gigs. At about 5:20 in the video, Rocky is encountered by Angie, who informs him that she has become pregnant from him. Rocky seems to have difficulty remembering Angie. She tells him she wants him to help her get an abortion.

Since she is on a break from her job at Macy's department store, she rushes back to work but tells him she works from 9 to 5 on the store's fifth floor.

======

The following video clip shows Rocky meeting with Angie at Macy's. He has made an appointment for her to visit a doctor on at 4 p.m. on the following Sunday. The abortion will cost $400, but she has only $200. Rocky thinks he might be able to come up with the other $200.

Rocky and Angie meet again on the Sunday -- a while before 4 p.m.. Between them, they do have the $400. Rocky gives the money to a man who will arrange the abortion, but it turns out that the total cost will be $450. The man takes the $400 Rocky and tells him to bring the remaining $50 at 4 p.m.  Rocky and Angie have only $24 of the necessary $50.

=======

The following video clip shows Rocky taking Angie to get the remaining $26 from his parents.

======

The following video clip shows (at about 5:00) Rocky and Angie arriving at the abortionist's apartment. Angie begins to undress. Rocky finds out that the abortionist is not a doctor, so Rocky cancels the abortion.

=======

The following video is the movie's trailer.
