When I searched for dance movies from the 1950s through the 1990s, the number per decade was the following.
1950s -- 7 dance movies=====
1960s -- 4 dance movies
1970s -- 6 dance movies
1980s -- 26 movies
1990s -- 12 dance movies
Of the 1970s movies, two were That's Entertainment movies that showed only excerpts from dance movies of previous decades. Two were foreign films.
The only two dance movies released originally in the USA during the 1970s were Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Slow Dancing in the Big City (1978) -- released in the decade's final years.
Saturday Night Fever was a huge money-maker. It was made for $3.5 million and earned $237.1 million in the theaters.
=====
Because Saturday Night Fever made so much profit, the production of dance movies grew during the 1980s. Below is the list of the 1980s feature dance movies (I don't list short or foreign films).
-----
Fame (1980)
-----
Flashdance (1983)
-----
Staying Alive (1983)
-----
This list will be continued in my next post.
