Other Movies that Opened on That Weekend in 1987

On the afternoon of Saturday, August 22, 1987, I went with my new girlfriend (later my wife) to see two movies that were opening on that weekend. We saw Dirty Dancing and The Big Easy. I don't remember the order that we saw them. We liked both movies.

I remember vaguely that we went to watch Dirty Dancing a second time a few days later.

The Big Easy is a detective movie that takes place in New Orleans ("The Big Easy"). A detective (played by Dennis Quaid) is investigating a murder, and he he becomes romantically involved with the female district attorney (played by Ellen Barkin) who is supervising the investigation. The movie's soundtrack includes a lot of wonderful cajun movie. My girlfriend and I bought the soundtrack CD and played it frequently during the years we were together.

The movie The Big Easy received good reviews and was commercially successful.

The other two movies that opened that weekend were Born in East LA and The Garbage Pail Kids. I never have watched either of them.

Born in East LA starred comedian Cheech Marin and has been summarized as follows:

Rudy Robles (Marin) is an American of Mexican descent who is caught up in an immigration raid on a factory. Deported to Mexico as an illegal immigrant, he has no way of proving that he is in fact an American citizen, and is forced to rely on his cunning to sneak his way back home.

The movie got bad reviews. Attendance dropped 40% in the second week.

The Garbage Pail Kids has been summarized as follows:

Seven disgusting kids are made of the green mud coming out of garbage can. Once alive their master gives them rules to obey, although they think that life is funnier without following stupid regulations. Naturally this causes some conflicts.
